Noveon® polycarbophils are acrylic acid polymers crosslinked with divinyl glycol. The products are fluffy, white powders and are sold in the acid form (Noveon® AA-1 polycarbophil) and calcium neuturalized form (Noveon® CA-1 and Noveon® CA-2 polycarbophils). The acid form is synthesized in ethyl acetate whereas the calcium neutralized polymers are synthesized in water.
Noveon® AA-1 polycarbophil is an excellent bioadhesive for vaginal, buccal, nasal and ophthalmic applications. Noveon® CA-1 and CA-2 polycarbophils are active pharmaceutical ingredients for bulk laxative tablets. These products swell in the intestinal tract, taking advantage of the natural water absorbency of polycarbophil. The swollen polycarbophil gel then acts as a bulk laxative as it moves through the gastrointestinal tract.
